Petty. Heartbreakers. Sold Out. Philly. Makes for a perfect evening! This being my 5th Petty show since 1999, I knew what to except. A solid show filled with hits, one of the tightest out there, and Petty's calm coolness to take us thru an evening of great music.
I pregamed earlier in the day listening to their debut on vinyl, which was perfect since he opened with the first song on the record, Rockin' Around (With You) and closing the show with the timeless American Girl. The show was filled with hits including Mary Jane's Last Dance, Free Fallin', I Won't Back Down, Don't Come Around Here No Me, Learning to Fly, Refugee, Running Down a Dream, and more. Petty played some deeper cuts like Yer So Bad from Full Moon Fever and the title track from 1994's Wildflowers. Petty also pulled a couple of tunes from his last couple record Mojo and Highway Companion, which fit in the setlist perfectly.
Highlights of the night for me was You Got Lucky. A video I used to wait for to come on MTV in 1983 and a song they hadn't played live in 30 years until the tour. Lead guitarist Mike Campbell also may be one the most underrated guitarists out there. Petty fans know his brlliance, but outside of them most probably couldn't tell you the name of a Heartbreaker.
The sold out crowd sang word for word with Petty all night. Petty of course was backed by the Heartbreakers, along with the Webb Sisters who helped with backing vocals. Petty rarely disappoints. Missed the show? Wanna do it again? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers return to the Wells Fargo Center in Philly for an encore performance on Saturday, July 29th. Tickets are still available at ticketmaster.com
