Red Hot Chili Peppers
Wells Fargo Center
I'll start off with I'm not a huge Peppers fan, but I dig enough of their tunes and definitely respect them as a band to check them out live. I saw them in 2000 in Camden on the Californication tour (opener was Foo Fighters) and impressed me. Sunday was much the same... left impressed, especially since it was the first of 2 sold out shows at the Wells Fargo Center 30+ years into their career. Must be doing something right! They came out blazing with hits Around the World, Snow (Hey Oh), The Zeyphr Song, and Dark Necessities. The middle of the set featured more new tracks from the Peppers latest The Getaway, as well as a few deeper cuts. Die hards had to be happy, while a casual fan might have been left a bit lost. No matter, the band was tight and energetic throughout the night. Ending with Suck My Kiss, Under the Bridge, and By The Way got everyone on their feet. The two song encore featured a quick cover of Philly's own Boyz II Men along with the closer Give It Away. The light show was impressive throughout, featuring overhead lights that reached over the floor seating. Giant screens added to the backdrop of the show and who wouldn't love a 50 something year old Flea doing a walking handstand across the stage to start the encore.
The Wells Fargo Center played excellent host to yet another show. PJ Welihans bar behind section 106 is always an excellent hang. PJW Copper Lager from Victory Brewery is definitely a must for beer and lager lovers, though I might have oversold it to my friends the following night.
